History of the department

Department of Mathematical Methods of Information Protection (MMZI) was created on March 30, 2000 by the joint efforts of scientists of the Institute of Physics and Technology of KPI named after Ihor Sikorsky and the Institute of Cybernetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The basis of the department's staff was the cryptographers of the academic department I.M. Kovalenko IC of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine named after V.M. Hlushkov, who had extensive experience in the field of information protection. During the existence of the department, 32 scientific research works were carried out on the order of the SB of Ukraine, the SZR of Ukraine. Defended 4 candidate's and 1 doctoral theses.

Until September 2021, the head of the department of mathematical methods of information protection was one of Ukraine's leading scientists in the field of cryptography Mykhailo Mykolayovych Savchuk, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, associate professor, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology.

Now acting the head of the Department of Mathematical Methods of Information Protection of the Educational-Scientific Physical-Technical Institute of KPI named after Ihor Sikorsky is Serhii Volodymyrovych Yakovlev, candidate of technical sciences, laureate of the President's Prize for young scientists.

Leading cryptologists in Ukraine and practitioners in the field of information protection work at the department. 2 correspondent members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 8 doctors of science and 15 candidates of science are involved in the educational process.

The main directions scientific activity of the department is:

• methods of mathematical analysis and synthesis of cryptographic transformations of information; methods of probabilistic combinatorics (supervisor — corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Savchuk M.M.)
• theory of reliability and risks (supervisor — corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Kuznetsov M.Yu.)
• analysis of the stability of protocols based on blockchain technology (scientific supervisor — Doctor of Technical Sciences Kovalchuk L.V.)
• blockchain technologies, consensus protocols and their use; models of cryptographic systems and methods of implementation of cryptographic mechanisms of information protection (scientific supervisor — Doctor of Technical Sciences Kudin A.M.)
• cryptanalysis of stream ciphers; post-quantum stable cryptographic algorithms based on linear codes (supervisor — Doctor of Technical Sciences Oleksiichuk A.M.)
• cryptanalysis of block ciphers and hash functions; ARX-cryptosystems and methods of their analysis (scientific supervisor — candidate of technical sciences Yakovlev S.V.)
• quantum computing and cryptanalysis in the quantum computing model; post-quantum stable cryptographic algorithms (scientific supervisor — Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Fesenko A.V.)
