Educational programs are constantly updated, current projects are put up for public discussion on the page Public discussion of educational programs.
Applied mathematics is a branch of mathematics that considers the application of mathematical methods, algorithms, and knowledge in scientific and practical spheres of activity.
The concept of applied mathematics — description of a problem or problem by mathematical means, creation of a mathematical model, research and solution of a formalized problem using a mathematical apparatus, verification of the correctness of the model, interpretation and practical application of the results.
Principles are a general approach and toolkit that uses mathematical methods and algorithms to describe and study phenomena and processes in various areas of human activity.
Students study methods and ways of creating mathematical models, formulating and solving practical problems in professional activities and during scientific research; study the methods of developing algorithms and using mathematical apparatus, creating and adapting complex software using competencies in fundamental and applied mathematical, physical and computer disciplines.
As part of the applied mathematics specialty at the Educational and Scientific Physical and Technical Institute of KPI named after Igor Sikorskyi, based on the Department of Mathematical Methods of Information Protection, an educational program is operating, aimed, first of all, at training specialists in the field of development and maintenance of cryptographic information protection systems and information technologies.
As you know, the level of development of human civilization depends on the amount of information that can be actively used by different social strata of the population, on the ability to efficiently store, quickly process and transmit it. In recent years, the world has seen the transition of society to a fundamentally new level of development, which is associated with a rapid increase in the amount of information, a significant increase in the speed of its processing, the expansion of opportunities for instant messaging for the purpose of communication, management, response, etc.
However, simultaneously with the incredible prospects that the latest information technologies open to humanity, the problems of ensuring confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, availability and untraceability of information, the impossibility of imposing and spreading harmful information are becoming increasingly large-scale. The development of methods and means of protecting information and cyberspace is aimed at counteracting such unauthorized interventions.
The development of modern cyberspace is inextricably linked with the emergence of new threats to information security and information technologies. The spread of the latest IT technologies, in particular the so-called "internet of things", cryptocurrencies, crypto exchanges, electronic election systems, "smart contracts", etc., radically changes cyberspace and requires the creation of new models of information security, new methods of cryptanalysis, effective systems for the protection of information technologies and systems management. At the same time, the number of cyberattacks on global critical infrastructures is increasing: power supply systems, management of banking and commercial structures, transport, in particular airports, and global databases.
Educational activity for educational program "Mathematical methods of cryptographic protection of information" aimed at training high-level specialists in the field of applied mathematics, cryptographic information protection and cryptanalysis, information protection in computer systems, and building complex information protection systems.
Graduates acquire knowledge and skills necessary for work in the field of applied mathematics, information technologies, cryptographic protection of information, in cryptographic analysis. Specialists will receive:
- advanced training in fundamental and applied mathematics, computer science, cryptography, cryptanalysis;
- deep knowledge in the field of computer sciences and information technologies;
- knowledge of the principles of construction, operation and use of classic and modern cryptographic information protection systems, authentication systems, digital signatures, cryptographic protocols, etc.;
- the ability to develop mathematical models of information processes, to solve practical problems of creating reliable information protection systems, to use cryptographic means in banking, commercial and other industries;
- the ability to conduct theoretical and experimental research in modern directions of mathematical methods of information protection, to formulate and solve the problems of cryptology — the science of how to protect information using mathematical methods, and how, on the other hand, to "break" the protection of information systems.
Specialists of this profile will be able to work in various fields — from various scientific institutions to commercial structures.
Within educational program "Mathematical methods of cryptographic protection of information" at the Department of Mathematical Methods of Information Protection since its foundation in 2000, intensive scientific research has been conducted with the participation of graduate students, students, and teachers. The main directions of scientific research and development are as follows:
- combinatorial-probabilistic models and methods in cryptography and cryptanalysis;
- development of theoretical-numerical and algebraic methods of cryptanalysis;
- development of principles, algorithms for analyzing systems and complexes of cryptographic information protection and obtaining evaluations of their effectiveness and stability;
- construction and synthesis of high-quality cryptographic transformations, stable cryptographic algorithms, cryptographic information protection systems, effective cryptographic protocols;
- study of the complexity of algorithms in the classical and quantum model of calculations with application in cryptography.
- research of the latest modern approaches in asymmetric cryptography.
For 20 years, the Department of Mathematical Methods of Information Protection has completed more than three dozen scientific research works on the orders of both state organizations and organizations with a non-state form of ownership.
Almost every year, students of the Educational-Scientific Physical and Technical Institute participate in the All-Ukrainian Olympiads in the field of "Cyber Security" (and before that, "Information Security" and "Security of Information and Communication Systems") and win prizes. Vsevolod Bakhtigozin, a student of the Department of Mathematical Methods of Information Protection, took 2nd place at the All-Ukrainian competition of student works on the specialty "Cybersecurity" in 2018, and in 2019, at this competition, a student of the department, Daria Yadukha, took 1st place.
Educational program "Mathematical methods of cryptographic protection of information" is a systematic approach to the training of highly qualified specialists in applied mathematics and cryptographic protection of information.
As part of the specialty 113 Applied Mathematics at the Educational and Scientific Physical and Technical Institute of KPI named after Igor Sikorsky at the base department of mathematical modeling and data analysis there is also an educational program Mathematical methods of modeling, pattern recognition and computer vision.
